Wonderland Amusement Park: Milwaukee’s Forgotten Fun

Long before Milwaukee families drove to Six Flags, they spent their summers at Wonderland — a magical amusement park that once stood on the shores of Lake Michigan and gave generations of Milwaukeeans their most treasured childhood memories.

The Park That Had Everything

Wonderland Amusement Park operated in the early 20th century, offering roller coasters, a carousel, a fun house, and a beach pavilion right on the lakefront. On hot summer days, the park was packed with families from every neighborhood in the city — a rare integrated space where Milwaukeeans of all backgrounds came together for fun.

The Rides People Still Talk About

Old-timers who remember Wonderland always mention the same things: the wooden roller coaster that rattled your bones, the carousel with its hand-painted horses, and the smell of popcorn and cotton candy that hit you the moment you walked through the gates. For a nickel or a dime, you could spend an entire afternoon in another world.

Gone But Not Forgotten

Like so many pieces of Milwaukee’s past, Wonderland eventually gave way to progress. The land was redeveloped, the rides were dismantled, and the park faded into memory. Today, the lakefront where it once stood is part of Milwaukee’s beautiful park system — a different kind of wonder, but a wonder nonetheless.

If you have old photographs or memories of Wonderland, the Milwaukee County Historical Society would love to hear from you. These stories are Milwaukee’s stories, and they deserve to be preserved.
