Got a weekend in Milwaukee? Here’s how to make the most of 48 hours in one of America’s most underrated cities. This itinerary covers the highlights — the food, the history, the culture, and the lakefront — while leaving room for the happy accidents that make travel memorable.
Friday Evening
Arrive and check into your hotel. Head to the Historic Third Ward for dinner — try Odd Duck for creative farm-to-table cuisine or Ardent for a more formal fine dining experience. After dinner, walk the Riverwalk along the Milwaukee River, then head to a bar on Water Street or in the Third Ward for a nightcap.
Saturday Morning
Start with breakfast at Comet Cafe on the East Side or the Milwaukee Public Market in the Third Ward. Then head to the Milwaukee Art Museum — arrive at 10 a.m. to watch the Calatrava wings open. Spend two hours in the collection, then walk the lakefront to Bradford Beach.
Saturday Afternoon
Lunch at a lakefront restaurant, then head to the Historic Third Ward for shopping and exploring. Visit the Broadway Theatre Center, browse the boutiques on Broadway, and stop for coffee at Stone Creek Coffee. In the afternoon, take a tour of the Pabst Mansion or the Milwaukee City Hall.
Saturday Evening
It’s Friday night — which means fish fry. Head to Serb Hall on the South Side for the full experience, or try Lakefront Brewery for fish fry with live polka music. After dinner, catch a show at the Pabst Theater or explore the bars of Walker’s Point.
Sunday Morning
Brunch at Maxie’s Southern Comfort, then a walk through the Estabrook Park beer garden (if it’s open). Visit the Milwaukee County Historical Society or the America’s Black Holocaust Museum before heading home.
