Every summer, for 11 days in late June and early July, Milwaukee becomes the music capital of the world. Summerfest — the self-proclaimed World’s Largest Music Festival — draws nearly 800,000 people to Henry Maier Festival Park on the lakefront, filling the air with music from over 1,000 acts across 12 stages.
How It All Started
Summerfest was the brainchild of Milwaukee Mayor Henry Maier, who visited Munich’s Oktoberfest in 1967 and came home determined to create something similar for Milwaukee. The first Summerfest was held in 1968 on the lakefront, drawing 150,000 people over its first run. It has grown every decade since, becoming one of the defining events of Milwaukee’s identity.
The Music Is Just the Beginning
Yes, Summerfest is about music — but it’s also about Milwaukee. It’s about standing on the lakefront with a cold beer watching the sun set over Lake Michigan. It’s about running into your neighbors and your coworkers and people you went to high school with. It’s about the smell of cream puffs and the sound of a cover band playing a song you forgot you loved.
Tips for First-Timers
Buy your tickets in advance — single-day admission is significantly cheaper before the festival. Arrive early to get parking or take the bus. Wear comfortable shoes — you’ll walk miles. Check the lineup in advance and plan your must-see acts, but leave room for happy accidents. Some of the best Summerfest moments come from stumbling onto an act you’ve never heard of and falling in love.
Summerfest 2026
