Every summer, Milwaukee’s lakefront transforms into a vibrant celebration of music, food, and community known as Summerfest — one of the largest and longest-running music festivals in the world.

🕰️ When It All Started
Summerfest officially kicked off on July 20, 1968, inspired by Munich’s Oktoberfest. It was the vision of then-Mayor Henry Maier, who wanted to bring a large-scale community celebration to Milwaukee. The first event wasn’t held in one place — it actually happened across 35 different locations throughout the city, from Milwaukee County Stadium to the Milwaukee Arena.

Just two years later, in 1970, Summerfest found its permanent home on Milwaukee’s lakefront. The chosen spot? A repurposed Nike missile site, now known as Henry Maier Festival Park — a 75-acre space that has become iconic for hosting the annual event.

🎤 Music Legends & Local Flavor
Summerfest has been the stage for some of the biggest names in music history, across every genre. Past headliners include:
- Paul McCartney
- The Rolling Stones
- Aretha Franklin
- Usher
- Whitney Houston
- Bruno Mars
- Stevie Wonder
- Dolly Parton
- And countless more…

Each year, several acts perform across 12+ stages, giving both legendary artists and rising stars a chance to shine.

🍔 More Than Just Music
While the music is the heart of Summerfest, the festival is also a cultural experience — packed with Milwaukee’s favorite food vendors, art installations, fireworks, and local merchants. From cheese curds and corn on the cob to lakefront sunsets and beer gardens, it’s as much a taste of Milwaukee as it is a music event.
📅 Modern Day Format
Today, Summerfest takes place across three weekends from late June through early July. This updated format allows for more flexibility and bigger acts — while giving locals and tourists more chances to attend without missing out.
📍 Where It All Happens
The festival is held at Henry Maier Festival Park, located at 200 North Harbor Drive. The main stage, the American Family Insurance Amphitheater, can hold around 23,000 fans, while other stages and open-air spots offer intimate and lively settings for all kinds of performances.
