Tucked within Milwaukee’s vibrant Washington Park lies a gem of musical and architectural heritage—the Washington Park Bandstand, officially known as the Emil Blatz Temple of Music. This iconic structure has been a cornerstone of community gatherings and cultural events for decades.

🏛️ A Gift to the City
In 1938, Emil Blatz, son of the renowned Blatz Brewing Company founder, donated $100,000 to construct the bandshell. Designed by Milwaukee architect Fitzhugh Scott, the Art Deco structure features elegant curves and classical motifs. Adorned with bas-reliefs of Greek muses and the names of 45 esteemed composers etched into its facade, the bandshell stands as a tribute to the timeless power of music.

🎤 A Stage for Legends
Since its grand opening, which drew an audience of 40,000, the bandshell has hosted an array of musical legends, including Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. Its “Music Under the Stars” series ran for 55 years, cementing its status as a premier venue for live performances.

🌳 A Community Gathering Spot
Today, the tradition continues with Washington Park Wednesdays, a free summer concert series that brings together local bands, food trucks, and community members for evenings of music and camaraderie. Each Wednesday from July to August, the park comes alive with diverse musical acts and vibrant community spirit.
