Its held on the first Tuesday of August in most areas, it serves as a platform to enhance the relationship between police officers and the public they serve.

Origins and Purpose

National Night Out started in 1984 in the western suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when Matt Peskin, then the Executive Director of the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), conceived the idea as a response to increasing crime rates and a growing disconnect between communities and law enforcement. The first National Night Out involved 2.5 million residents across 400 communities in 23 states. Since then, the event has burgeoned into a nationwide phenomenon, with millions of participants from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases around the world.
